First Day Hike?

How did you spend your first day of the new year?

Me? Well I slept in. Hey now…8 AM is sleeping in for this tired mom. 🙂  Then I dragged myself down stairs with a clinging toddler still rubbing sand from her eyes, fed the pets and ground the coffee beans.

After I got my little a snack and a show to watch, I proceeded to pack numerous snacks for our….wait for it….wait for it….First Day Hike!!!  What a great way to kick off the new year! Through snow and some ice, we managed to hike 2.16 miles this morning and eat every single morsel  of food I packed! My 2.5 year old daughter walked 1.3 miles on her own two little legs before she started to melt down, cry, and refuse to walk. Hiking with a toddler is always an interesting experience. So I do what any hiking mom does; I slung her on my back, secured her into my Onya carrier and away we went to hike the last bit of the trail.

It was cold with crisp, damp air, but oh so beautiful. We were able to see the HUGE nest of a pair of Bald Eagles and also a small family of deer grazing. The way the sun caught the icy snow was brilliant and sparkling. It was a great day for a hike.

We spent the rest of the afternoon reading books, breaking in the new treadmill with a few miles, and simply enjoying the tired ache of a long day of physical activity. As I write this post, I am up reading for my MBA course that begins tomorrow. I feel focused. I feel ready.

How did you spend your first day of 2017? Do you have a special tradition? I would love to hear about it in the comments section.

  1. I’m impressed. We thought about going for a walk, on principle, to start out the new year. But it was so cold and rainy. We just stayed in and did drawings (family of artists here) and I worked on my puzzle, and we watched a movie. 🙂
