I posted a few days ago about the closing of one chapter and a new one beginning now that my daughter is in full-time preschool. Yesterday was the first day of school and the first day in three-plus years that I have been alone while working from home. When I went outside to check the mail, I saw this guy.
I have heard of “animal spirits” usually in the context of humor, so I didn’t think much of it. I snapped a few photos and when I left in a rain storm to pick up my daughter from school, this guy was gone. Or so I thought….
After the rainstorm, it reappeared. The evening continued with several pop-up showers and thunder and again he or she… would find cover. When I walked outside this morning to put school bags in the car, there was my buddy!
I thought this was a little curious. We all took turns looking at the praying mantis and saying good morning before we were on our way. Now that I am back home working for the day, I check in on it every once in a while, a little paranoid that a bird will eat it up.
I also started researching why a praying mantis would be clinging to our front door. When I googled “praying mantis on my front door”, this was the first thing that popped up:
If Praying Mantis has crawled into your space;
Usually the Praying Mantis makes an appearance when we’ve flooded our lives with so much business, activity, or chaos that we can no longer hear the still small voice within us. Taking a step back and some simple meditation would be in order here because the external din we’ve created needs to be quieted so that we can come back to our own truth. The Mantis always comes to us when we need peace, quiet and calm in our lives.
If the Praying Mantis is your Animal Totem:
You have learned to take your time and live your life at your silent pace. Furthermore, you never make any movement without careful thought or contemplation. You know exactly where you are going and when you will get there. Even within this calm and serene environment you are capable of quick and decisive action when opportunity presents itself.
I am not a superstitious person but this hit me in the heart a little and gave me goose bumps. Things have been a whirlwind since the August full moon and eclipse. We are suddenly in contract for another house, have listed ours for sale, organized a yard sale in 5 days (and pulled it off!), and suddenly I have become the money holder for our family budget and am also working on figuring out my husband’s small business expenses. And if that’s not enough in the past 4 weeks, my daughter began full-time preschool, I am finishing up my presentation for the Leadership Academy program at work, and am currently 31 weeks pregnant! Whew! That’s a LOT!
As far as the praying mantis being my animal totem, I am not 100% sure. I grew up seeing praying mantises often. I always assumed it was because I spent a lot of time outside and in the woods. However, I live in an urban environment now, on a very busy side street in the heart of the Capital City of New York State. This is the first praying mantis I have ever seen while living in this home (8 years). But the message (from what I Googled) is timely and speaks to me. I am also a cautious and tenacious Cancarian who does not make decisions lightly but once they are made, there is no turning back.
Changes has been flooding my world for a good while now. A new baby will bring more change. I have been sending back canvass letters for State jobs, we are looking to move out of the city into a school district that has a reading proficiency score higher than the 17% our city elementary schools have (yes, good old city school district!). Change, change, and more change.
Perhaps this praying mantis is reminding me that decisions coming ahead will need to be made quickly and that I should not ignore my inner need for rest and focus. I do feel oddly drawn to this buddy and hope that it is in fact my animal totem.
Do you have an animal totem? Do you believe animals send us messages?
